3 things that surprises people when it comes to working in a biological laboratory:
1. Lab coats aren’t that common. Maybe it’s more common in chemistry, but it’s definitely not always used in biological labs. Sure, we wear gloves and we might perform experiments in a ventilated area, but that’s often the extent of protection when it comes dressing up to to handle most chemicals.
2. A lot of time is spent sitting and reading. Running experiments is important, but not if you don’t know what’s going on in the field. The best researchers find a good balance between reading and running experiments. .
3. STEM degrees don’t indicate intelligence. There’s something wrong if someone is trying to assert their intelligence by their degree or work ethic. Sometimes, it’s an easy way out in a sexist and/or racist setting, or when trying to argue against very very stubborn and uninformed opinions. Anyway, there are dumb people graduating from ivy leagues and dumb people with PhDs.
