Audrey Hepburn

Although she is most known as a fashion icon, Audrey Hepburn was also really involved in humanitarian work. Hepburn has been rewarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom among other awards and honors.⁣

Hepburn was mostly involved as a UNICEF ambassador (1988-1993; 50 years!), traveling to provide food to starving children, testifying before the US Congress, hosting ceremonies, and promoting UNICEF. (UNICEF, United Nations Children’s Fund, provides food and water, medical care, vaccines, education, and protection for children living in dangerous or underserved areas.) I thought her contribution to humanitarian work was incredible and had to share.⁣

“Whether it be famine in Ethiopia, excruciating poverty in Guatemala and Honduras, civil strife in El Salvador, or ethnic massacre in the Sudan, I saw but one glaring truth: These are not natural disasters but man-made tragedies for which there is only one man-made solution-peace.”⁣
-Hepburn’s statement to the UNICEF executive Board, 1989⁣
