Princess Scientists (3/4): Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle

Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle, in addition to earning a PhD in biochemistry, was once Miss Massachusetts! At the beginning of her science career, while an undergrad at MIT, she was signed up by her friends to participate in a pageant. At first she mocked participating in the competition with remarks about wanting to be a serious scientist, but now she says that the experience helped her become a more well-rounded person. ⁣

Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle is now the CEO of Ixcela, a health tracking system that assesses gut metabolites. Furthermore, this doctor is also the Executive Director of an organization she founded, Science from Scientists (SfS). SfS focuses on inspiring elementary and middle school children to pursue science and engages almost over 8,000 children a month! She notes that delivery – being charismatic, encouraging, and reliable – has more impact on inspiring children than content. ⁣

People write concerns about the US educational system devaluing curiosity; an idea about how this curiosity is either reserved in artists or taught to researchers and how stereotypes influence who feels comfortable fulfilling these roles. But here is Dr. Angle, a pageant winner and a science instructor, kicking stereotypes in the butt!⁣
