Find the Face

This painting is a bit abstract, but you might be able to identify a face. Meanwhile, an AI might have difficulty identifying this as a portrait – we’re smarter than a computer! The brain region primarily responsible for identifying faces is called the fusiform gyrus. We don’t have brain areas specific for identifying trees, but we do for faces. This is thought to reflect our reliance on communicating with facial expressions. Also, our ability to quickly identify faces may make parent-newborn bonding easier. Anyway, your brain really cares about identifying faces and so it comes pretty easily for us and so we’ll see faces in places that don’t even exist, even toast.
